RV Camping Along the Scenic M-22 Northwest Michigan Highway

If you ask anyone from Michigan what is one of the most scenic roads in the state, M-22 will invariably be near the top of their list. The 116-mile state highway runs from Manistee in the south to Traverse City in the north. It follows along the Lake Michigan shoreline, making up a portion of the Lake Michigan Circle Tour route. The highlight of the M-22 route could easily be the section through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which was named by Good Morning America as the Most Beautiful Place in America in 2011.The autumn colors along this roadway will amaze you in the fall, but spring and summer trips are just as beautiful on this winding two-lane road. In fact, summer is one of the most popular times of the year for visitors along the route. The following destinations are four lovely RV campgrounds along the M-22 route that are perfect for an overnight stop or a week-long stay as you explore the scenic roadway.


Arcadia, Michigan

Arcadia Campground Marina


This campground is a great home base for visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a must-see if you are planning on being in the area. With 15 RV sites available, this campground is located at the tip of Bar Lake in the Arcadia Valley, just ten miles from the historic town of Frankfort. This quaint little campground is surrounded by golden sand dunes and boasts easy on-site public beach access. This campground is open from May through September.

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Betsie River Camp Site


This 96-site campground is a mile off M-22, settled along the beautiful Betsie River. It’s central location makes it a great hub for visiting nearby attractions like the charming city of Elberta, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, or the Point Betsie Lighthouse. This family-owned campground has a fully-stocked camp store, pull-through sites, and an easily accessible marina that lets you get to some prime fishing spots. This campground is open from April through November. 


Betsie River Campsite offers campers with the following:

  • Picnic tables and fire pits

  • Camp store

Sleeping Bear Dunes Overlook

Empire Township Campground


This 60-site rustic campground gives you an intimate experience with the great outdoors. Located just five miles from the town of Empire and Sleeping Bear Dunes, this peaceful campground is a hidden paradise that is perfect for relaxing and getting away from it all. For a reasonable price, you get a secluded and spacious site that is surrounded with lush forests and active wildlife. This campground offers nine sites with electric hookup and two group sites for a larger camping space. This campground is open from May 15th through September 15th.


Empire Township Campground offers campers with the following:

  • One-flush toilet

  • Outhouses

  • Drinking water

  • Ice and wood


Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes

Lake Leelanau RV Park


Just minutes off M-22, this 196-site park is situated on the shores of Lake Leelanau in the Leelanau Peninsula. Cool off in the crystal clear waters or catch some sun lounging on the 800 feet of pristine Lake Leelanau frontage. This RV park offers a modern clubhouse with fun family games like ping pong and pickleball courts, exceptionally clean restrooms, a playground, wagon rides, and free pipe organ concerts! This park is open from May through October
