Who Was Doug Coombs?
The Coombs Classic isn’t just a fun skiing event, it's a commemorative celebration honoring the life and legacy of Doug Coombs. Born in 1957, Coombs was a prolific skier who lit up the slopes with his no-holds-barred style and untamed passion for the sport that he loved. He relished in the world of high-altitude extreme skiing. Aside from being a two-time World Extreme Skiing Champion, Coombs was also sponsored by Marmot for nearly 25 years. Tragically, in 2006, Coombs died from a cliff fall while trying to come to the aid of a fellow skier. The Marmot Coombs Classic is held each year to honor not just his exceptional skiing career, but also his remarkable life as a humble athlete, a devoted family man, and a great friend to all.
About the Event
Open to ages 7 and older, the Marmot Coombs Classic is held at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Jackson Hole, WY. Despite the fact that Coombs had once been banned from the ski resort after entering a closed-off area of backcountry terrain, the resort has ironically hosted the event commemorating his life since its inauguration. Participants of the annual event receive one raffle ticket for each run they complete, with a maximum limit of 5 tickets. There are two route options to accommodate varying abilities, both The Coombs Headwall and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. In addition to raffle tickets, participants also receive a commemorative patch. Following the event, there is an on-site after-party which features live music, socializing, and free giveaways. The tickets earned during the ski portion of the event are used to raffle off Marmot outerwear and gear!
Overnight Accommodations
While there are on-site lodges within Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, there aren’t any RV accommodations available. Luckily, just a ten-minute drive from the ski mountain you’ll find the Jackson Hole Campground. As one of the only local campgrounds offering winter RVing sites, this RV park is an excellent choice for staying in town during the Coombs Classic event. The campground can accommodate rigs with a maximum length of 65 feet, with full-hookups at each site. The campground also offers heated bath and shower houses, laundry facilities, a camp store, pull-through sites, and a dump station. Book your stay online or over the phone!
