Summer is drawing to an end and that can only mean one thing: football season is right around the corner.And with that comes RV tailgating, which has become an American tradition.
RV’ers have been tailgating since the very first college football game between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869, when fans traveled to the game by carriage and buckboard (think very early RVs), and grilled sausages and burgers at the "tail end" of the horse.
So, you can see the idea of tailgating has been around for years, but have you ever experienced it with an RV?
The first thing they need to know is that an RV is easy to use and combines all the conveniences of home to enjoy at the stadium.
You no longer have to worry about having to cram everything into your old vehicles, which have limited storage space, or worry about not packing something you know you will need later.
With that as a backdrop, the tailgating season kicks off with Michigan and Michigan State both opening their seasons this weekend.
Michigan State will host Western Michigan University on Friday at 8 p.m. and Michigan opens its season Saturday against Central Michigan at 3:30 p.m.
Plenty of fans will descend on both campuses in their RV's for the right that annual right of fall.
Here is a look at both universities and the tailgating options they offer for RV’s.
MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan State RV parking in Lot 92 on Service Road between Hagadorn and Bogue for $30.
Fans tailgating on the campus of Michigan State University should remember the 7,9,1 policy which is the following:
• Campus parking lots open for tailgating for noon football games at 7 am.
• For football games in the 3:30 pm time slot, parking lots will open at 9 am.
• Parking lots will open at 1 pm for night games at Spartan Stadium.
• Fans may continue to tailgate for up to 3 hours after the game ends.
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
On any given Saturday, Ann Arbor likely becomes the second-largest city in the state of Michigan, and the massive crowd inside the stadium spends the morning and early afternoon tailgating outside the stadium.
Purple Lot (Pioneer High School): Only season reserved RV pass holders will be allowed to enter the Pioneer site on Friday evenings at Gate No. 3. All others (including Non-Reserved Season Pass RV holders) will not be allowed to enter on Friday evenings and will be turned away. Entrance will be on Saturday morning beginning at 6 a.m. All RV's are welcome to stay until Sunday at noon. Information about parking at Pioneer High School can be found at their parking website.
Brown Lot: (Varsity Tennis Center): RV's with a permit may park at the Brown Lot on Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m. RV's who show up at the Brown Lot without a permit will be directed to the Maize or Pioneer RV cash lots. RV's are welcome to stay in the Brown Lot until Sunday at noon.
Maize Lot: (Commuter lot south of Varsity Tennis Center): RV's may access the Maize Lot off of State St. and pay $60 for entry. The lot opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Blue Lot: RV's may only access the blue lot with a Blue Lot RV permit. There are no day-of-game cash sales for RV's at the blue lot. All RV's will be directed to the RV parking area in the blue lot with the exception of RV reserved spaces. RV Pass holders interested in obtaining a reserved spot should contact the Athletic Department Development office at (734) 764-7131.
So, this college football season, put on your team colors and support your team with the luxury of an RV.
